What is Records and Information Management?
Records Management (RM) is the systematic approach to handling the university’s information—from the moment it’s created to its final disposal. The VIU RM Program ensures that records are organized, protected, and accessible in ways that reduce risk and liability, comply with legal, requirements, align with best practices, save on storage and administratin costs, and streamline workflows.
Whether it’s a student transcript, a research file, or a departmental memo, every record has a lifecycle. Our program helps staff and faculty manage that lifecycle responsibly—ensuring records are:
- Properly classified and stored
- Retained for the right amount of time
- Protected from unauthorized access
- Securely disposed of when no longer needed
